Referee Seminar 11/16/2018

Posted on November 5th, 2018 at 9:51 am, in Uncategorized

The Indiana division of fencing will be offering a Referee seminar conducted by Sean Shumate on Friday, November 16, 2018 from 6 PM to 10:30 PM.  You can register here on AskFred.net.

Sean is a nationally certified referee instructor and has numerous experience refereeing the highest levels of national and international events. We will have a working dinner so please bring food and drink. Those wishing to do their practical can do so the next day.

Preregistration opens on 10/18/2018
Preregistration closes on 11/15/2018 at midnight.

Please make sure that you have adequately prepared by going through the Study Guide:

If you are planning to take the test, or need more information about becoming a referee you can visit the USA Fencing Referee Commission web page, where you will find links to test and information: http://www.refereescommission.org/blog/become-a-ref/

Attending an official FOC-sanctioned clinic, along with successfully passing the written exam is a prerequisite for the practical exam, which will be available through observations as part of IN DIV 2018 Turkey Shoot.

The Referee Development Seminar will provide you with a broad understanding of the role, responsibilities, and duties of a referee, as well as refine your sense of right of way, timing, and application of the penalties. The Study Guide will prepare you for the written exam. The two together are designed to prepare you for the demands of refereeing actual fencing bouts.

Once a passing score (90%) has been achieved on the written exam (both the general section and one or more weapon-specific sections) a referee receives a rating of “P” in each weapon passed. Further ratings improvements (1-10) can be obtained at a later date – such as at the Turkey Shoot – by being evaluated in a practical setting at tournaments.

The cost of the clinic is $75 per person. This includes a seminar and practical observation if needed.

Who should attend:

- Aspiring referees – who want to learn how right of way and rules are being applied at a national and international level

- Athletes – who want to improve their games and get a more complete understanding of their sport

- Coaches – who want to maintain their grasp of current interpretations and rules updates

- Parents – who want a better understanding of tournament format and the basics of sport fencing for their children

- Current referees – who need to fulfill their yearly requirement for seminar attendance or further their personal goals.

Preregistration opens on 10/18/2018.
Preregistration closes on 11/15/2018.
